Modifying plans to fit your own needs

I recently completed building an outfeed table / work bench, for my shop.  I will be the first to give credit where the credit is due.  The original plans for the build were created by Stone & Sons Workshop.  The plans are great just as is, without any modifications.  If you’d like to build your own outfeed table like the one shown in this post, or anything else from Stone and Sons, click here to get the downloadable plans.  This table had nearly everything I was looking for from an outfeed table, and based on the design I could easily modify it to better fit my personal needs/wants.  Here are some of the things I modified:

  • I added 2 more drawers for a total of 6 drawers
  • I made all the drawers as wide as possible without making the side cubbies useless.
  • I added adjustable feet.  Eventually I plan to upgrade my table saw and I wanted to be able to easily adjust the table height if my next table saw was a little taller.
  • Because I already have a router table I opted out of including the Jay Bates router lift.
  • Rather than adding the dog holes I included a grid system of T track rails.
  • Instead of adding a down draft table I am using the cutout as another tool tray.  In the future if I have the need I can still add the downdraft table easily.
  • And finally I screen printed the Foley Woodworking logo into the top.  It the screen printing does not hold up I plan to burn my logo into the top using a method I saw Laura Kampf use a couple of months ago.

Here are some of the features I still plan to add at a later date.

  • Electrical outlets
  • Side port for dust collection to make connecting table saw dust collection easier.

With the use of primarily pocket hole jointery, if I ever decide to change my mind about the design it will be very easy to make additional modifications.
